BOOK OF THE WEEK!- “Blues for Mister Charlie” by James Baldwin

Updated: Jul 6, 2020

For our first book we have chosen the play “Blues For Mister Charlie” by James Baldwin (1964). Baldwin was a Black Rights Activist who has published many novels, essays and plays on the subject. Blues For Mister Charlie explores the true story of the murder of a young black boy called Emmett Till. Who was lynched in Mississippi at the age for 14 by a group of white men. Although the names of these original people are changed for the play and the plot differs slightly it is a very educational piece.

“Explosive, eloquent, honest... To read it is devastating.” -San Francisco Chronicle
