Well, it’s funny how kids try to do things their parents weren’t able to do.
And you'll wonder, Why? Why did I have to cross an ocean to learn that?
You'll tear around drunk with your best friend
You'll sing: Mama's planting trees, Mama's growing tall,
Mama's loving hard... and dance in the snow
One night at 4 a.m., you'll dig your fingernails into her waist
when she starts talking about tossing herself into the canal
And the next morning she'll laugh, Aren't I dramatic?
You'll have another health scare and this time it'll be
something
You'll recover
But a new appreciation for your body will descend
You'll resolve to drink more water, eat more vegetables and
exercise more
And you will
For a while
At 30 you'll say, I've been thinking of moving away.
Away? Like, this country?
No. Away overseas.
Why not? says your best friend. Why not now?
By then you'll have done the work you thought would make
you happy
And realised that it didn't—it doesn't
And
After much self-flagellation and introspection, you'll have
recognised that half the reason you do this work is pure of
heart— you want to do it
But the other half is all about being legitimised
At first, you thought, By institutions.
And then you knew, Oh. Yeah. (By him.)
And then you'll betray your younger self, turn down
opportunities and move to a new country
Put an ocean between who you were then and who you'll be
next
And your best friend will say, I hate it! But you have to go.
You'll go
From afar, you'll watch your friends couple off
Babies will be born
By choice
By design
Sometimes by painstaking effort and expense
By people you never dreamed would have, let alone want, a
baby
You'll be baffled
You're an adult in a romper, wearing a backpack, living in a
shared flat
You'll wonder if you're a perpetual child or existentially a
youth
You'll ask your brother and god
And when neither of their answers are satisfying
You determine that you didn't come here to make a baby
You came here to do something
Important
Age is a Feeling
